The Bronx Defenders – an innovative, progressive, holistic indigent defense office in the South Bronx – seeks an experienced attorney dedicated to the representation of parents in child welfare proceedings.

Family Defense attorneys at The Bronx Defenders are at the forefront of a movement to provide holistic, institutional representation to parents in Bronx County Family Court, who are fighting allegations of child abuse and/or neglect.  They are dedicated to fighting on behalf of parents whose parental rights are in peril while creating long-term solutions for the reunification and stability of families. Family Defense Attorneys will primarily litigate abuse and neglect cases, but will occasionally appear in concurrent matters including custody, visitation and termination of parental rights cases. Family Defense Attorneys are part of the larger interdisciplinary teams at The Bronx Defenders, but work especially closely with Parent Advocates and Social Workers.

  • Zealously represent parents in child protective proceedings in Bronx Family Court and any concurrent matters including custody, visitation and termination of parental rights cases
  • Work closely with social workers and parent advocates as part of their representation, as well as collaborate with criminal defense and civil attorneys on matters of immigration, benefits and housing
  • Effectively communicate and negotiate with judges, caseworkers, child attorneys and representatives of the Administration for Children’s Services on behalf of parents
  • Assist parents in accessing appropriate resources and services to restore full parental rights

  • Applicants with at least 2 years of experience in the field of Family Law or a related field preferred
  • Experience working in the child welfare system is highly preferred
  • J.D. from an accredited law school; member in good standing to the New York Bar or eligibility for admission to the New York Bar
  • Experience working with and on behalf of racially and socioeconomically marginalized communities
  • Excellent research, writing and advocacy skills
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with a demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative setting with other professionals
  • Spanish speaking candidates are highly encouraged to apply
