Overview

The Bronx Defenders – an innovative, progressive, holistic legal defense office in the South Bronx – seeks an energetic advocate with a commitment to social justice to join our Family Defense Practice as a Parent Advocate in a new “Early Defense” initiative, representing parents in the earliest stage in a child welfare case--the agency’s initial child protective investigation.

 

The Bronx Defenders seeks a thoughtful and dedicated Parent Advocate to join our Family Defense Practice. The Parent Advocate is an integral part in the representation of parents from marginalized communities under investigation for allegations of abuse/neglect of their children. The Parent Advocate will be part of an interdisciplinary team of lawyers and other advocates, and will connect them with community based support and assist in the development of a legal strategy for the parent.

 

Responsibilities

  • Advocating for parents in conferences and meetings with the Administration for Children’s Services (ACS) that are held as part of a child protection investigation
  • Attending other meetings with clients at ACS and foster care agencies
  • Engaging and assessing client needs
  • Linking clients with relevant programs for substance use, anger management, parenting, and mental health services, and advocating with service providers
  • Accompanying clients to appointments throughout the Bronx and NYC to ensure seamless access to services
  • Working collaboratively with clients, lawyers, social workers and other advocates
  • Conducting home and program visits
  • Documenting work in case management system
  • Assisting clients and legal team in setting goals and assessing progress
  • Developing partnerships with service providers who can refer clients with pending ACS investigations
  • Conducting “Know Your Rights” trainings with parents regarding ACS investigations

Qualifications

  • Two years of case management/advocacy experience OR a Bachelor's degree (preferably Bachelor of Social Work) from accredited university. In the alternative, an Associate’s degree plus 1 year of practical experience may suffice
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to and interest in working collaboratively
  • Experience working in and with racially and socio-economically marginalized communities
  • Commitment to social justice and defending the rights of parents charged with abuse and neglect
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) strongly preferred
  • Experience with family court or child welfare system strongly preferred
  • Knowledge of the Bronx a plus
