The Bronx Defenders – an innovative, progressive, holistic indigent defense office in the South Bronx – seeks someone energetic to join our Criminal Defense Practice as an Arraignment Court Advocate.


The Arraignment Court Advocate will serve at the front lines of our Criminal Defense Practice, handling the administrative intake process in Bronx arraignment court for clients appearing before a judge for the first time after arrest. The Arraignment Court Advocate will work in the fast-paced environment of the courthouse, completing data entry, and liaising with attorneys, court staff, and the office of The Bronx Defenders. The Arraignment Court Advocate will report directly to the Legal Administrative Manager.



The Arraignment Court Advocate will:

  • Communicate effectively and professionally with colleagues and court staff, including court clerks, staff from the District Attorney’s office, and law enforcement
  • Check computer system for conflicts of interest between parties
  • Enter paperwork for cases during arraignment shifts quickly and accurately
  • Prepare case packets; scan and organize case files
  • Provide general administrative support when necessary, which may include front desk reception support, clerical projects, and general office responsibilities
  • Troubleshoot with attorneys and court staff for the processing of cases
  • Work weekend and night (until 1:30AM) arraignment shifts as needed
  • Maintain and organize supplies for arraignments office and courtroom


  • Experience working with and in racially and socioeconomically marginalized communities
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Interest in and ability to work collaboratively in a team-based model
  • Ability to multitask and remain organized in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to exercise discretion and maintain client confidentiality
  • Degree from an accredited institution, preferably in criminal justice or an allied field as well as administrative experience, or
  • One year of administrative, general office, or legal clerical experience and any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities have been achieved
