The Robert P. Patterson Mentoring Program—an innovative mentoring program for Bronx youth housed at The Bronx Defenders—seeks an energetic intern with a commitment to social justice and a passion for working with young people.
The Robert P Patterson Jr. Mentoring Program (RPP) provides Bronx youth with meaningful support and interventions by creating an innovative, team based, community-oriented mentoring program for a cohort of youth at The Bronx Defenders. Each young person is paired with two mentors: community and legal. The community mentor is a person who is from/lives in the Bronx. This person is essential to the match relationship because they provide guidance and support for youth who are navigating adolescence, trauma, life-changes and poverty in the Bronx. The legal mentor is a person who works in the legal profession (i.e. an attorney, legal advocate, investigator, etc). This person helps the youth to understand and have positive experiences with the legal system. They are also responsible for exposing them to different social, academic and professional skills and networks. Based on the match relationship, the roles of the community and legal mentor overlap. The youth’s caregivers are an integral part of this holistic mentoring unit. We aim to include their caregivers in programs, activities, and organizational services.
