The Bronx Defenders – an innovative, progressive, holistic indigent defense office in the South Bronx – seeks a professional, energetic Intake Clerk to join our Family Defense Practice.


The Bronx Defenders’ Family Defense Practice (FDP) provides legal representation and social work support to parents charged with child abuse and neglect and who are at risk of losing custody of their children.  FDP represents over a thousand new parents each year and is on family court intake five days a week.  Parents appearing in Bronx Family Court are often in crisis and facing the loss of what is most important to them in the world: their children.  The Bronx Defenders seeks to provide parents with a legal sanctuary and safe space in its small courthouse office to have their questions answered and their anxieties soothed amidst the chaos of one of the busiest courthouses in the country.  The court office also provides administrative support to the over fifty attorneys and advocates representing our clients in Court on any given day.


Reporting directly to the Legal Administrator Manager at The Bronx Defenders, the FDP Intake Clerk will provide administrative support to the practice in the family courthouse.


Support Services

  • Prepare motions and affidavits to be filed in court, upon request
  • Provide notary service
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with our attorneys as well as court staff, including court clerks, staff from the District Attorney’s office, court officers, police officers, and corrections officers
  • Provide general administrative support when necessary, which may include front desk reception support, clerical projects, and general office responsibilities
  • Assist in troubleshooting with attorneys and court staff for the processing of cases
  • Pick up metrocards when needed
  • Cover the FDP Liaison in their absence


Information Management

  • Electronically open and close all cases in our case management system
  • Conflict check cases in the case management system


  • Excellent interpersonal and verbal communication
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Effective multitasker
  • Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines
  • Good organizational, time management and problem-solving skills
  • Strong proofreading skills and knowledge of grammar, spelling and punctuation
  • Ability to work well independently as well as part of a team
  • Interest in social justice work - specifically issues affecting individuals impacted by the criminal, civil and family court systems
  • Experience working in and with racially and socioeconomically marginalized communities
