    The Bronx Defenders – an innovative, progressive, holistic indigent defense office in the South Bronx – seeks a creative, strategic, and thoughtful Director of Communications who will be responsible for developing and advancing communications strategies that 1) advocate on behalf of clients 2) advocate for and with the community we serve 3) amplify the voice of the organization 4) ensure alignment with our brand and values.

     

    BxD is a public defender non-profit that is radically transforming how low-income people in the Bronx are represented in the justice system, and, in doing so, is transforming the system itself. BxD seeks thoughtful, creative, energetic individuals with a strong commitment to social justice to join our dynamic and diverse staff. Our staff of over 300 includes interdisciplinary teams made up of criminal, civil, immigration, and family defense attorneys, as well as social workers, benefits specialists, legal advocates, parent advocates, investigators, and team administrators, all of whom collaborate to provide holistic legal and social service advocacy. Through this integrated team-based structure, we have pioneered a groundbreaking, nationally-recognized model of representation called holistic defense that achieves better outcomes for our clients.

     

    Each year, we defend 27,000 low-income Bronx residents in criminal, civil, child welfare, and immigration cases, and reach thousands more through our community intake, youth mentoring, and outreach programs. Through impact litigation, policy advocacy, and community organizing, we push for systemic reform at the local, state, and national level. We take what we learn from the clients and communities that we serve, and launch innovative initiatives designed to bring about real and lasting change.

     

    Responsibilities

    Communications plays a key role in realizing the mission and vision of The Bronx Defenders. The success of this position will include positive outcomes for our clients, improved policies and practices for our communities, support for our work and innovation, and the engagement of key stakeholders. This person will thrive in a complex and fast-moving environment that requires deep collaboration, the centering of clients, impeccable judgment, and the ability to problem solve under pressure.

     

    The Director of Communications will:

     

    • Develop, execute, and measure the performance of tailored strategies for each distribution channel (with a primary focus on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and Email)
    • Work with practices, policy and strategic partnership teams to guide and amplify the organization’s messaging across various issues and positions
    • Work to identify and produce compelling content to amplify the voices and experiences of our clients and community members
    • Oversee external facing products and messaging to ensure alignment with organizational views and values
    • Work closely with other practices to design and implement communications components of issue-specific advocacy, impact litigation, campaigns, lobbying, and development
    • Anticipate, strategize around, and manage crisis communications around high-profile cases
    • Supervise and mentor communications staff
    • Help build the capacity and confidence of staff to engage and participate in communications
    • Oversee the organization’s digital communications and platforms, including its website, social media accounts, and email blasts

    Qualifications

    Applicants must have:

     

    • A belief in the mission of The Bronx Defenders and a demonstrated commitment to social justice and criminal justice reform
    • Minimum of 5+ years communications experience and a demonstrated track record of leveraging press, social media, and digital communications
    • Experience amplifying the voices and experiences of racially and socioeconomically marginalized populations
    • Knowledge and appreciation of how communications can be a tool for change  
    • Strong messaging, writing, and editing skills
    • Experience in developing and maintaining an organization’s voice and tone
    • Excellent interpersonal skills
    • Integrity and discretion in handling confidential information
    • Spanish language proficiency preferred but not required
