The Bronx Defenders (BxD) is a public defender non-profit that is radically transforming how low-income people in the Bronx are represented in the justice system, and, in doing so, is transforming the system itself. BxD seeks thoughtful, creative, energetic individuals with a strong commitment to social justice to join our dynamic staff.
Our diverse staff of over 300 includes interdisciplinary teams made up of criminal, civil, immigration, and family defense attorneys, as well as social workers, benefits specialists, legal advocates, parent advocates, investigators, and team administrators, all of whom collaborate to provide holistic legal and social service advocacy. Through this integrated team-based structure, we have pioneered a groundbreaking, nationally recognized model of representation called holistic defense that achieves better outcomes for our clients.
Each year, we defend 27,000 low-income Bronx residents in criminal, civil, child welfare, and immigration cases, and reach thousands more through our community intake, youth mentoring, and outreach programs. Through impact litigation, policy advocacy, and community organizing, we push for systemic reform at the local, state, and national level. We take what we learn from the clients and communities that we serve, and launch innovative initiatives designed to bring about real and lasting change.
All applicants must be dedicated to serving racially and socioeconomically marginalizes communities, and to collaboratively contributing to the holistic defense of our clients. Spanish proficiency is a strong plus.

Summer Internship Diversity Programming
The Bronx Defenders offers a range of diversity programming and activities for interns from underrepresented backgrounds and experiences, including but not limited to the following:
Intern of Color Mentoring Program
Recognizing the underrepresentation of people of color in the legal profession, and the need for greater representation in the public interest field, The Bronx Defenders offers an Intern of Color Mentoring Program (IOC) to our summer intern class. Self-identifying interns of color who opt-in to the IOC Program are paired with mentors of similar backgrounds and interests who offer professional support and guidance. In addition to social events and networking mixers, the IOC Program features a Race, Class, and Privilege Discussion Series, in which interns have a safe space throughout the summer to unpack the nuances of privilege and oppression as it relates to their lived experience, and the representation of marginalized communities.
LGBTQ+ Mentoring Program
Interns who identify as LGBTQ+ may opt-in to this program, in which they are paired with mentors of similar identification, orientation and/or interests who provide professional support and guidance. The Bronx Defenders LGBTQ+ mentoring program creates a supportive safe and supportive space for participants to explore nuances of privilege and oppression as it relates to their lived experiences and representation of marginalized populations. Activities include a variety of meetings and social events.
Need-Based Diversity Funding
Due to limited resources, our internship opportunities are currently unpaid. We encourage applicants to seek funding from their academic institutions or third-party funders. We understand that unpaid internship opportunities are less accessible to those from less privileged backgrounds, which disproportionately affects interns from the communities we serve. Acknowledging this, we do attempt to provide assistance for interns who have demonstrated financial need and diversity of experience that relates to the representation of our clients. Each summer intern class will receive information about financial assistance, assuming funding is available.
