Returning Candidate?

Welcome

The Bronx Defenders – an innovative, progressive, holistic indigent defense office in the South Bronx – seeks thoughtful, creative, energetic individuals with a strong commitment to social justice to join our dynamic staff.

Since opening our doors in 1997, The Bronx Defenders has served over 300,000 clients in Bronx County. The Bronx Defenders pioneered a model of legal representation called holistic defense, designed to fight both the causes and consequences of court-involvement. Our staff of over 250 lawyers and advocates work on interdisciplinary teams made up of criminal defense, civil, immigration, and family defense attorneys, as well as social workers, legal advocates, parent advocates, investigators, and team administrators, all of whom work to provide holistic legal and social service advocacy to our clients. The Bronx Defenders also houses a community organizing and an impact litigation team, serving as a community resource and force for systemic change. We engage with clients, community residents, and policymakers as we seek ways to better serve the Bronx community and enhance access to justice for all.

All applicants must be dedicated to serving racially and socioeconomically oppressed communities, and to collaboratively contributing to the holistic defense of our clients. Spanish proficiency is a strong plus.

Compensation for all staff positions is commensurate with experience and accompanied by excellent benefits.

Summer Internship Diversity Programming

The Bronx Defenders offers a range of diversity programming and activities for interns from marginalized backgrounds and experiences, including but not limited to the following:

Intern of Color Mentoring Program

Recognizing the underrepresentation of people of color in the legal profession, and the need for greater representation in the public interest field, The Bronx Defenders offers an Intern of Color Mentoring Program (IOC) to our summer intern class. Self-identifying interns of color who opt-in to the IOC Program are paired with mentors of similar backgrounds and interests who offer support and professional guidance. The IOC Program presents social activities such as mentor/mentee mixers, as well as a “Race, Class and Privilege Discussion Series”, in which interns have a safe space throughout the summer to discuss personal and professional experiences while exploring the nuances of oppression and intersectionality. Discussions and trainings are designed to empower interns in their careers, but also to explore the ways in which we might empower and become better advocates for our clients from marginalized experiences.

LGBTQI Mentoring Program

Interns who identify as LGBTQI may opt-in to this program, in which they are paired with mentors of similar identification and experience who provide support and professional guidance. The Bronx Defenders LGBTQ working group creates a supportive safe space where interns can discuss personal and professional experiences while exploring the nuances of oppression and intersectionality. Programming includes but is not limited to Orientation Cultural Competency Trainings, mentor/mentee mixers, collective participation in the Annual Pride Parade, Field Trip to the Bronx Trans Collective, and Queeroke (Queer Karaoke). Discussions and trainings are designed to empower interns in their careers, but also to explore the ways in which we might empower and become better advocates for our clients from marginalized experiences.

Due to our limited resources, our internship opportunities are currently unpaid. We encourage applicants to seek funding from their academic institutions or third-party funders.
